According to research, when adults who are middle-aged or older pursue creative passions and activities, it can help preserve their mind and fight off dementia. Try these ways to keep your mind sharp.
GET CREATIVE: People who do artistic activities are 73 percent less likely to have memory and thinking problems. In one study, participants who take on craft-based projects such as sewing, woodworking, and ceramics in midlife and old age were 45 percent less likely to encounter cognitive problems.
GET ON THE COMPUTER: Connect with your grandkids on Facebook, type up for family history, or surf the internet for new recipes. Researchers found that using a computer later in life reduced the risk of thinking problems by 53 percent.
SOCIALIZE: Go to a concert, join a cooking club, or hike with a friend–you’ll have fun and will be 55 percent less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment.
